After clinching the runner-up spot in the Asian Model Search in 1994, Ling was whisked off to New York. It was kismet that one of the judges at the competition was Zang Toi. He fitted her into his spring/summer 2005 show in New York and the rest is supermodel history.
“I love children but I’m still busy with my travels,” said Ling.
Despite being surrounded by famous designers, fellow models and celebrities all her professional life, Ling said she was overwhelmed by the crowd that turned up for MODA’s gala.
Like Ling, these new girls have an issue with the English Language.
“It was great flying in together with Zang for the MODA show and walking with him down the runway. And then we were off to Penang for a few days and sampled the food there.”
“We (which included fellow New York-based Malaysian uber fashion designer Zang Toi) headed to a restaurant in Jalan Imbi for supper. When we got back to the hotel, I had to answer so many business e-mails. By then it was close to 4am,” revealed Ling, who despite the lack of sleep looked radiant when she turned up for the interview the day after the gala.
It’s hard to find any celebrated designer who has not got her to walk the runway, done a fashion campaign or endorsed some of their labels or products. Armani, Balenciaga, Chanel, Chloe, Dior, arc teryx jackets, Escada, Ferragamo, Fendi, Gucci, Gaultier, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent are just some of the A to Z of labels.
Current MODA president Gillian Hung fondly remembers Ling’s first catwalk show in KL which was for Isetan.
Ling leaves us with some food for thought indeed. She has opened the door for a slew of Asian models, the likes of Chinese girls Emma Pei, Shu Pei, Du Juan and current It girl Liu Wen,north face, who are now making waves on international runways.
A shoot done by Peter Lindbergh for Neiman Marcus in 2005.
By the time the gala had ended and she had removed her make-up, it was way past midnight.
“That’s what I wanted for the Gala to highlight great designers and models like her. We had Maggie Loo (70s beauty queen who first started a modelling agency) and then Cilla after that. So I knew Ling from way back then. It’s about time we find the next Ling!” she said.
After Ling, Malaysia has not had more international models to boast of. Any success on the modelling front is regional at best.
Ling has more time for travelling these days as her commitments are more for brand campaigns and editorial shoots.
Told that they bear a strong resemblance to each other, Ling brushes it off. “Not really, I look like my mum and Ein looks like my dad. Personality-wise, Ein is like my mum, they both like to do things at a fast pace. My Chinese name Mang means slow in Chinese.”
She has come a long way indeed. Back in the early days, Ling spoke no English.
“Irving Penn (one the most influential photographers of the 20th century) shot me for American Vogue and for Issey Miyake’s book which was published in 1999. He passed away last year, canada goose outwear, at 92,” Ling added.
She was apologetic about the “bump” in her tummy when we were doing the photo shoot earlier, though my colleague, photographer Raymond Ooi, and I did not notice any signs of it. I jokingly told her that perhaps we should put a note on her midriff saying, “sponsored by nasi lemak.”

“It was great to see so many people whom I admire but have never seen or met. Then I met old friends like Hannah (Toolseram, Malaysia’s top model in the 80s and former house-model for the House of Versace), (Tengku) Azura, (a “veteran” and still one of our best models), Eric Choong (designer), Michael Ong (designer) and Cilla Foong, who taught me how to walk the runaway, and she looked amazing. I really enjoyed the show; I enjoyed meeting so many young and aspiring designers and models,” said Ling in pretty good English.
After featuring in a Tiger Beer ad in Malaysia in the early 90s, the American producer of the commercial saw her potential. Ling barely spoke a word of English then and it helped that the producer spoke Mandarin.
Pick up a magazine like Vogue, the north face, Harper’s Bazaar, Conde Nast Traveler, Marie Claire, Elle, Allure, Amica, Visionaire and W, and there would have been a cover or pages that featured her.

Tan Mang Ling (her real name) had earlier enjoyed a good helping of nasi lemak at the Zang Toi cafe in Pavilion KL where this interview was held. Though she occasionally indulges in her passion for food, it never shows on her amazingly slim 178cm tall frame.
In a previous interview six years ago, Ling told me she kept fit by running from airport to airport because her work took her around the world. Ling is not one to opt for limos and chauffeured rides; she actually uses the local subways wherever she is.
Dressed in Zang Toi’s signature pantsuit with New York City skyline cape at MODA’s 20th anniversary gala.
“Shu Pei asked me for help with her English and I recommended the teacher who coached Ein (Ling’s younger sister and fellow model).”
She had earlier shown us her vacation pictures and was particularly pleased with some shots she took in a market in Kuching as “their fruits are bigger than normal”.
It is a fulfilling life indeed, but is it enough for Ling? Does she look forward to settling down and starting a family?

Ein, a highly successful model, christian louboutin shoe, teaches Mandarin in between bookings. She also gives piano lessons to young children. Both sisters love to spend time at museums and galleries during their downtime. Ling’s favourite subject is contemporary paintings.
Ling was down in Malaysia last December and stayed on till March. It was the first time she spent Chinese New Year with the family since she made New York her base.
The siblings have been photographed by the famed Leibovitz. They did their sister act for the covers of Harper’s Bazaar Malaysia and Singapore May issue this year.

After a long hiatus from the runway, Ling was back with a bang last March when she walked for the Givenchy Fall/Winter 2010 show in Paris.
“There have been thousands of shots of me so it’s hard for me to choose some personal favourites. Probably the ones done by Lindbergh for the Neiman Marcus campaign in 2005 and by di Battista. The shoot for Battista was very slow, it was literally one picture a day. He used a special camera and it took that long to ‘cook’. I just napped while waiting,” said Ling with a loud laugh.
“I swim about one hour, very slowly. I only learnt to swim four years ago. I can tread water for one minute and have learnt how to dive a little. It’s so much fun because we also play some games in the pool, canada goose,” she enthused.
The Kuala Lumpur-born 35-year-old supermodel was back in town for the Malaysian Official Designers Association (MODA) 20th Anniversary Tribute Gala. Ling certainly did not believe in dieting while in Malaysia. She ate with gusto, though she admitted she was more careful with her diet back in New York where she is based.
LING Tan had laughingly admonished me for refusing to eat. “You’re Malaysian and we’re in Malaysia and you want to diet? Who’s ever heard of people in Malaysia dieting?” she teased, alluding to the scrumptious spread that we have all year round.
Steven Meisel, Annie Leibovitz, Peter Lindbergh, Mario Testino, Ellen Von Unwerth, Gilles Bensimon, Patrick Demarchelier, Jean Baptiste-Mondino, Michelangelo di Battista, Matthew Rolston and the legendary Richard Avedon (who photographed her for the Pirelli calendar) are but a few of the famous shutterbugs who captured her through their lens.

Ling who loves travelling managed to visit Miri, the Mulu Caves and Kuching with her mother and some friends during that recent work break.

Ooi was in photographer’s heaven, working with a model who has been on the international scene for 16 years!
“I love going to new places and I love to take as many pictures as I can, north face,” said Ling.
Professional and easy to work with, Ling Tan is sought after by top designers and photographers.
Ling in a gorgeous black silk satin gown with pink velvet ribbon, pleated tulle and organza strap from the Zang Toi Spring 2009 collection.
Her last project was a video for Polo Ralph Lauren for the Fall 2010 campaign.
Ling’s mum joined us during the later part of the interview, and it is true that Ling resembles her!
It is easy to see why Ling is so highly sought after by top fashion designers and fashion photographers around the world. She is very professional and easy to work with, and there’s not a trace of diva attitude. She hits the mark every time and is open to suggestions.
On top of all that walking and running, Ling is now into swimming.
While Ling has not walked for Zang for some time, they are bosom buddies who meet up often and attend many events together in New York.

Four of the most unlikely TV stars own and run “Gold and Silver Pawn,” which also happens to be the setting of one of the biggest reality shows on TV.
”We never thought the show was going to be this big,” said Rick Harrison, star of the History Channel’s “Pawn Stars.”
Nearly 6 million people tune in each week to watch Rick, his dad Richard “Old Man” Harrison, his son Corey “Big Hoss” Harrison and their family friend Austin “Chumlee” Russell, hash it out with people trying to pawn their often outrageous items.
”You couldn’t cast a crew like my family,” laughs Harrison. “I’ve been described at the blue collar historian. But I’m really not that cool.”
But many of their viewers would beg to differ. It seems they can’t get enough of the “Pawn Stars”.

While there are few brands considered as iconically American as Coach ― Tommy Hilfiger perhaps, Perry Ellis, christian louboutin boots, and the recently resuscitated Halston are a few of the frontrunners ― there are also few who seem to struggle with their sartorial identity as much as the brand famous for their logo-printed bucket hat. That may sound cruel, but it’s one of the things we’ll forever associate with Coach. And that’s a problem.
Regularly dubbed an “accessories giant” ― or, alternatively, “behemoth” ― by most industry publications, Coach is certainly doing well for itself. Named one of North America’s healthiest retailers by Amazon.com, the brand is expanding into Europe and has beefed up its fragrance presence. But all the good numbers in the world can’t silence one nagging question: who actually wears Coach?
Sure, moncler sales, they sell their keychains and small leather goods and they’ve done their best to harness the wild, wild internet by partnering with well-known style bloggers on bag designs, but when was the last time a celebrity walked the red carpet wearing Coach?
Though, in a perfect world, jimmy choo shoe, celebrities would not be the barometer of a successful brand, discount christian louboutin shoes, there is something to be said for, well, branding. Coach is a brand, christian louboutin boots, but a brand whose ubiquitousness may have been its downfall.
When Coach was founded in Manhattan in 1941,moncler jackets for sale, the label specialized in handmade and high-quality leather goods. But now the label’s most common association are its geometric Cs ― which for some reason don’t hold the same cachet as Gucci’s Gs,christian louboutin cork heel, Louis Vuitton’s LVs, or Chanel’s envy-inducing interlocking Cs. Maybe it’s because though they still make their high-quality and high-priced leather goods, Coach has made a concerted effort to focus on the under $300 market.
This isn’t to say that slapping a several hundred dollar price tag on a pair of shoes or taking a 20% price hike a la Chanel is the answer ― we’re fans of democratic fashion ― but there are plenty of brands, American ones at that, who manage to straddle the line between high-fashion and high sales. Marc Jacobs is one, Burberry another. We lust over MJ’s $328 Fantastical Tale bag as much as we do his $1,750 Imogen leather one.
Maybe it’s that brands like Burberry and Marc Jacobs have RTW collections that inspire and, in the case of Jacobs, quite often change the face of fashion ― but in our minds, Coach just doesn’t compare. Reed Krakoff may have launched an eponymous collection of women’s wear under the brand’s umbrella, but only time will tell if it’s enough to give Coach back its fashion cred.

Google’s official Android app store is getting some competition as upstart, independent challengers create their own app stores to lure users with the promise of more freedom, better access to apps and increased revenue.
But it’s all kosher because, unlike Apple, Google allows for multiple app stores to exist on the Android operating system.
A new Android app store called AndSpot plans to coax developers and users to try an alternative Android app store with better search and app-recommendation features.
“Google’s Android Market is slow and not as user friendly as it can be,” says Ash Kheramand, christian louboutin evening shoes online, one of the co-founders of AndSpot. ”You don’t leave the Market thinking ‘this is great.’ Instead you are thinking, this is slow, clunky, moncler mens jackets, and if you are a developer, christian louboutin sandals sale, ‘my app is not getting much exposure.’”
Over the next few weeks, Kheradmand and his co-founder Faisal Abid are hoping to unveil a snazzy new app store that they say will have better design and a better way to discover apps.
“We want to bring a level of personalization to the marketplace,” says Kheradmand. AndSpot is currently in private beta with its features available only to a small group of developers and users. (Two hundred Gadget Lab readers can check out Andspot using the invite code: WIRED3R5TY.)
Andspot is not the only one trying to take on the official Google app store. Larger publishers such as Handango and GetJar have distributed a number of apps through their stores across multiple platforms ― though on the iPhone they just publish individual apps.
But now smaller Android exclusive startups such as Andspot, SlideMe and AndAppStore are getting into the fray. Why develop just an app when you can build an app store, they say.
Similar to the official Google app store, these startups are hoping to become a central distribution platform for developers who want to get their apps out. The difference, they say, is they will go where Android Market has failed to tread.
“It’s all about promising more attention for apps,” says Vincent Hoogsteder, co-founder and CEO of Distimo, an apps analytics company. “If you are a developer targeting a specific market, it is easier to put your app in a store focusing on that, instead of losing yourself in the Android Market. If you are a consumer, then the idea is to help you find better apps.”
Google launched Android, an open, free, mobile operating system, in 2008. And like Apple, which pioneered the app-store idea, the Android OS also allows independent software applications through its Android Market. But that’s where the comparison ends.
Apple approves every app that makes it to its App Store. And it allows for just one app store, the Apple App Store. Rejects from Apple’s app store have the option of going to an underground store called Cydia. But Cydia apps are available to only jailbroken iPhones.
Google hopes to avoid that with Android. Multiple app stores can exist on the Android phone and apps don’t have to be approved before they hit the official Android app store.
In an intensely crowded app world, getting noticed is the big challenge. Finding Facebook, Shazam or Pandora on the Android Market is easy. But for smaller apps like Time Lapse or Zum Zum,cheap moncler, the key to survival is finding enough eyeballs.
“There are 50,000 apps in the Android Market, manolo blahnik boot, while your phone lists only 50 apps at a time,” says Hoogsteder. “You are seeing just a fraction of what’s out there.”
That’s why many new Android app stores such as AndroLib and AppBrain have focused on being meta-stores, places that aggregate and let you search Android apps. But to actually download the apps, users have to go to the Android Market.
AndSpot and SlideMe are a step ahead. They are trying to convince enough developers to publish apps directly to their stores, in addition to offering them on the official Google Market. So users who have SlideMe or AndSpot will never have to go to the Android Market, if they don’t want to. Developers don’t have to make any changes to their apps intended for the Google Android Market before they list it on AndSpot or SlideMe.
SlideMe, which launched in April 2008, doesn’t take a cut of the revenue from app sales. When apps are sold through its store, SlideMe subtracts a payment-processing fee required by the credit card company (which usually is about 3.5 percent) and any applicable tax, and lets developers keep the rest. Apple and Google both allow developers to keep just 70 percent of the revenue they get from their sales.
Instead, SlideMe makes money by licensing its entire app store to gadget manufacturers. That also means SlideMe’s app store will come pre-loaded on a phone similar to Google’s Android Market.
Last year, SlideMe landed its first deal with Vodafone Egypt to pre-load its app store on the HTC Magic. The SlideMe app store will also be on Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 phones sold in the Middle East.
“Not all manufacturers can comply with the requirements of Google, chanel online, so Google can’t give them the app store,” says Christopoulos. “That’s why SlideMe can be on more than just phones. We are thinking netbooks and in-car infotainment systems.”
AndSpot says, for now, it plans to offer developers an 80 percent cut of the revenues from its app store. But Kheradmand is not sure AndSpot can sustain the pace. “We are operating on very thin margins here,” he says.
Offering developers more revenue by finding ways to make money off their apps is key to the survival of these independent app stores.
Google’s Android Market lags behind its peers when it comes to paid apps. Distimo’s analytics show almost 75 percent of apps in the Apple App Store are paid, discount lanvin shoes, compared to just under 43 percent in the Android Market.
Only nine countries are allowed to distribute Android paid apps currently because of Google checkout restrictions, points out Hoogsteder. Consumers from only 13 countries can get access to paid content.
That cuts out a lot of international developers and users, says Christopoulos. For instance, a Polish developer created a game called Speed Forge 3D that couldn’t be sold through the Android app store in many countries because of restrictions around Google Checkout. The app is listed on SlideMe for approximately $3.
SlideMe will also focus on localized apps and tailor its app store by country.
“You might be from a country in the Middle East and not speak English. We can help you find apps in your local language,” says Christopoulos.
AndSpot says both users and developers will find the independent Android-focused app stores a sweet deal.
“Users will go where the apps are, and developers will be attracted because they have nothing to lose,” says Kheradmand.

Deceptively simple, even minimalist, it demonstrated her mastery of precision cutting, a skill she doubtless honed when she was director of the couture studio for Christian Lacroix before starting her own house in January.

The eccentric British designer explained that he wanted to do something bold and fresh with flowers, “allowing their colour, christian louboutin wedding shoes sale, texture and structure to inspire a new, modern beauty.”
PARIS ― John Galliano turned the runway into a lush garden for his exuberant couture show for Christian Dior on Monday, in tribute to the legendary French designer’s love of flowers.
Among the front-row celebrities, actress Marisa Berenson said: “It’s like a fairytale. It makes me think of Alice in Wonderland.”
The floral influence was palpable in the cut of skirts which looked as if they were composed of petals, and bustiers, sprouting fragile filaments in silk chiffon like pistils. Organza frocks appeared to have been constructed from hundreds of buds sewn together.
American top model and house favourite Karlie Kloss opened the show in a violet mohair coat with elbow-length red gauntlets.
Her understated elegant pants suits, two-pieces with sleeveless tops and dresses, came in classic neutrals, cream, navy, alexander mcqueen online, and black in jerseys, lightweight wool crepe and silk georgette.
Here and there she slashed the side or back of a top to reveal a flash of gold and emphasised the plunging V-necklines of her evening frocks with solid V-shaped gold necklaces.

No fussy embellishment spoiled the uncluttered look: as sole adornment she used contrasting piping, like shiny black and white satin on navy, to edge jacket fronts, pockets and hemlines. Her other fetish was dinky half belts.
Another rising talent, France’s Chrisophe Josse said his collection was inspired by Luchino Visconti’s film “The Innocent” with its romantic costumes from the 1900s with their silhouette of strangulated waists, accentuated busts, and voluminous puffed-up shoulders.
Models had their lacquered hair curled up into a chignon, covered in a veil of cellophane, like a bouquet fresh from the florist.

While some evening gowns were cut close to the body, most billowed out into ultra-full skirts with trains, emphasising slender waists.
